Preventing Tonsil Stones

Tonsil stones won’t kill you. But they give rise to a range of uncomfortable and embarrassing side effects. Throat-swelling, chronic coughing and humiliating bouts of halitosis are what you can expect if your tonsil stones go untreated. Thankfully, they are easy to remove at home. But, how about preventing tonsil stones from appearing in the first place? Here are some effective ways to prevent the formation of these stones.

Oral Hygiene


Tonsils stones are comprised of calcified bits of food and bacteria. It’s important, then, to regulate levels of bacteria in the mouth. You can easily do this by adopting a solid oral hygiene regimen. Brush your teeth twice a day, or after every meal. (It’s amazing how many people don’t do this!) It’s also important to know that brushing alone won’t bacteria levels at a minimum. Flossing once a day will target all of those hard-to-reach spots where germs tend to thrive.

If that’s not enough, try using an oxidizing mouth wash daily. The oxygen in this product will counteract the activity of tonsil stone-causing anaerobic bacteria. An effective tongue scraper will also get rid of these elements – you’ll be amazed at how much bacteria and other matter the tongue can accumulate if it isn’t cleaned every day!

Diagnose yourself and see if you need to adopt other strategies with regards to oral health. If you suffer from allergies or post-nasal drip, chances are you have dangerously high levels of anaerobic organisms crawling along your tongue and tonsils. Gargling daily – with a good oxidizing product or home-made saline solution – will help counteract the damaging effects of high levels of oral and nasal mucous. Be sure to drink plenty of fresh, cleansing water after eating.

Diet and Lifestyle


Dairy products like milk and cheese have proteins that result in the appearance of anaerobic bacteria. They also cause excess levels of mucous to appear in the body, which is also rich in tonsil stone-causing components. Restrict your intake of dairy products to avoid the development of anaerobic bacteria. These types of bacteria also love sugar. Avoid drinking fizzy sodas and eating foods that are high in sugar and glucose. Refined foods like white bread are also high in sugar content.

Cigarettes and alcohol can also contribute to the development of tonsil stones. Both contain mouth-drying properties. A dry mouth is an inviting breeding ground for all manner of bacteria, especially the anaerobic kind. You’ll dramatically reduce your chances of developing stones if you avoid smoking and drinking.

A Clean Lymphatic System

The lymph system in our bodies works as a kind of trash-removal system. It filters toxins and other types of “rubbish” from parts of the body, and deposits them in places where they can be “excreted,” through the digestive system.

The tonsils are one such “dumping” spot. And the more toxins there are, the higher the levels of bacteria. It is therefore a good idea to limit the levels of toxins in your body by maintaining a healthy lymphatic system.

An effective way to do this is to embark on a good detoxifying regime. Drink lots of water and eat plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables, high in fibre. These substances all ensure that the lymph system works efficiently. Get moving with some moderate exercise. This will up the circulation in the body, and pump up the rate at which the lymph system cleans the body. Yoga is a popular and effective solution.

These are only a few of the ways you can ensure that you never get tonsil stones. Of course, if you already have tonsil stones, there are many simple ways that they can be removed, either surgically or at home.
